AERO is a Trailblazer to the Future of General Aviation

April 18, 2023 | Press Conference

Friedrichshafen, Germany – The 29th international aviation trade show AERO (April 19 - 22, 2023) starts tomorrow. With more than 670 exhibitors from 35 nations, the most important trade show for General Aviation shows significant growth compared to last year's edition. The transformation of aviation toward greater sustainability has also continued to grow in importance: This year, the AERO Sustainable Aviation Trail will feature around 126 exhibitors.

Aviation is an indispensable component of global mobility, ensuring not only the rapid transport of high-value goods, but also personal exchanges between people. General and Business Aviation often play an underestimated role in the public perception. There are significantly more General Aviation aircraft than commercial aircraft worldwide, and General Aviation registers more take-offs and landings than commercial aviation. In Germany, there are about 800 commercial aircraft registered, but about 6,600 single-engine aircraft, 3,800 powered gliders, more than 5,000 ultralights and more than 7,700 gliders. General Aviation and air sports are important drivers of innovation, as new engines, new materials and new technologies in general aviation aircraft can be certified more quickly and with less effort, and thus later find their way into commercial aviation as well.

From April 19-22, 2023, the international aviation industry will gather in Friedrichshafen for AERO 2023, where more than 670 exhibitors will showcase many new products and services, ranging from new aircraft, new propulsion concepts, manned and unmanned aerial cabs, new accessories - such as headsets - to new software that makes flying easier and safer, and new service offerings.

Tobias Bretzel, AERO show director at AERO organizer Fairnamic GmbH, says: "At AERO, exhibitors always meet a very knowledgeable audience that meets the new products and innovations with high expectations. They will not be disappointed at AERO 2023 either, because in this phase of transition that aviation is currently going through, aviation is showing what innovative power it has. AERO is an incubator for innovation, because this is where practitioners and visionaries come together and can intensively exchange ideas about solutions. We support these efforts, among other things, with the 'AERO Sustainable Aviation Award', presented for the first time this year, which honors particularly promising projects."

At the traditional industry talk on the day before the trade show, Dr. Markus Fischer, Divisional Director of Aeronautics at DLR (German Aerospace Center), Cate Brancart, Manager European Operations and Safety, GAMA (General Aviation Manufacturers Association), Jean Botti, CEO & CTO, VoltAero and Claus Cordes, President DAeC (Deutscher Aero Club e.V.) discussed the short- and medium-term challenges for General Aviation and the approaches to solutions and joint efforts of manufacturers, associations and research institutions. In addition to the quest for greater sustainability, the challenges include the global shortage of skilled flying and technical personnel, as well as in production and maintenance.

Sustainability is not only reflected in new projects, but also in extending the service life of existing aircraft and accessories. At AERO, various suppliers will show how they are modernizing and reengineering existing aircraft to meet current and future requirements.

Unmanned aviation is playing an increasingly important role. At AERO, exhibitors will showcase their aircraft at the special AERO Drones trade show from April 19 to 21 in Hall A2 and discuss important topics for the industry, such as the design of airspaces in which manned and unmanned aircraft fly.
